Set permanent closure date of August 31, 2022 for Rydin Road homeless encampment

Several speakers raised concerns about the proposed August 31st closure date being too rushed and inhumane, with one speaker noting the timing coincides with council vacation. Speakers argued that closing the encampment without adequate preparation would scatter residents throughout Richmond streets and fail to address underlying housing needs.

Many speakers advocated for enhanced transition support including dedicated Collaborising staff, flexible relocation funds, financial assistance for hotel vouchers and deposits, and comprehensive resident assessments. One current resident specifically requested assistance with relocation to a new location they had identified.

One speaker described problems including increased trash and drug paraphernalia, crime, threats, and drain on city resources affecting businesses and visitors to Point Isabel Regional Shoreline.
